Burn

We often spend the majority of our lives running away from the fires burning within us — the unnamed anxieties, the attachments to gain and loss, or the restlessness of a mind that has not rested for a single day.

Until a certain moment, when the outside noise can no longer reach you, you hold in your hands a piece of raw agarwood.

The act of igniting a small flame at the tip of the incense is not merely a physical action. It is the moment you consciously choose to pause. A courageous acknowledgment that you are here, and you need to return to yourself.

Lighting the agarwood

But the essence lies in that flame. Pure agarwood cannot withstand the aggression of a strong fire. Excessive heat will scorch the precious essential oils, reducing serenity to a harsh smoke, entirely stripped of its purity. You must keep the flame gentle, minuscule, just warm enough to awaken the silent wood resin after decades of weathering the elements. The philosophy of appreciating agarwood mirrors how we face our own mind: it cannot be rushed, it cannot be forced through impatience, but must be approached with patience and gentleness.

If the flame flares up too quickly, gently fan it with your hand to cool it down, making way for the ember to spread at its own rhythm.

The journey of transformation has begun, and is your mind — at this very moment — ready to confront its own lingering thoughts?

We often mistakenly believe that burning is an act of destruction, throwing a beautiful entity into the massacre of flames to exploit its fragrance. But with agarwood, the flame is by no means a destroyer. It is merely a serendipitous catalyst to awaken the most quintessential elements.

The essence of agarwood is crystallization. It is the wood resin voluntarily secreted by the Aquilaria tree to soothe the wounds inflicted by storms, sun, rain, and insects over decades. It embraces the pain, transforming it into a sweet fragrance to offer to the world. When you place a small flame onto that grain of wood, you are neither a rescuer nor an invader. You only serve as a catalyst, helping the incense fulfill its ultimate mission: bringing stillness to reality. Recognizing this reveals that the bond between humans and flora has never harbored greed; rather, it is rooted in gratitude and pure compassion.

Going deeper, the moment the small flame catches and you gently fan it to lower the heat, is also the moment you close your eyes.

At this point, the eyes no longer observe the external world. All attention is withdrawn and completely entrusted to the sense of smell and the breath. Yet, the very moment you sink into stillness, the mind instantly plunges into a silent riot. Unresolved anxieties, past regrets, calculations for tomorrow, and chaotic images surge forward. Our instinct is to panic or forcefully try to cast them aside.

Meditation with incense

But the agarwood incense teaches us a different kind of letting go. Let those stray thoughts appear; simply observe them without judgment. See the thought arise, acknowledge its presence, and then let it drift away on its own, just as the glowing ember silently radiates heat from the center, moving through each wood fiber, transforming every rough outer layer into a pure, clean fragrance.

Let everything unfold exactly as it is. Then, come back, my friend; return to yourself, to the present moment, and feel the scent of agarwood and your own breath. Feel grateful that you are still sitting here, having agarwood to enjoy, a tranquil space for refuge, and that nothing out there can touch you right now. Those anxieties are ultimately just like clouds in the sky — they gather, and then they dissolve.
