When people look at an incense stick, they usually smell only the agarwood. Few realize there is a silent conductor holding the whole performance together: litsea gum (known in Vietnam as bời lời powder).
Without it, the powder would just be loose dust. It shapes the stick and keeps the burn steady. Yet, it is also the most abused ingredient in the market. Many manufacturers misuse or hide it to cut corners, sacrificing true agarwood quality for profit.
Here is how we look behind the scenes at Nam Oud.

The Anatomy of a Good Incense Stick
Think of binding gum like spices in cooking. Good food doesn't need heavy spices to mask bad meat; it needs the right balance to let the main ingredient shine.
In incense making, litsea gum acts the same way. Extracted naturally from tree bark, pure and well-processed litsea gum is virtually odorless when burned. It doesn't choke the fire or create black smoke. But raw gum naturally contains impurities like tannins and resins that cause acrid, sour smells. If a maker skips the thorough washing, filtering, and drying process, those impurities ruin the pure scent of the agarwood.
Even worse, once the incense is shaped, the moisture trapped inside must be properly cured and dried. Skipping this step turns the incense smoky and harsh. At Nam Oud, we never rush this aging process.
The Myth of "Gumless" Incense
Lately, "gumless incense" or "coil incense" has been marketed as the ultimate standard, 100% pure powder, highly natural.
It sounds appealing, but physics tells a different story. To make a coil or certain shapes without gum, manufacturers must compress the powder extremely hard. This crushing pressure flattens the natural wood cells and traps the precious essential oils inside. Instead of diffusing smoothly, the trapped oils burn unevenly, creating a harsh, burnt smell.
True gumless or low-gum incense requires ultra-clean raw materials (often throwing away up to 50% of impurities) and extremely fine, specialized grinding. It is costly and technically demanding. While Nam Oud does offer convenient coil incense for modern, fast-paced lifestyles, true fragrance connoisseurs will always recognize that a well-crafted bamboo-less stick offers a deeper, truer experience.

Our Promise at Nam Oud
We could easily chase the industry trend of claiming "less gum is always better" just for marketing points. But true agarwood craftsmanship isn't about shortcuts.
We choose a more deliberate path: using just enough high-grade, purified gum to keep the structure elegant, while leaving the natural pores of the agarwood open so the oil can truly breathe.
It is a harder path with higher costs, but we believe that true value speaks for itself. True business begins with kindness, what benefits the product and the user will always find its way forward.
